Australian Music Writers Encourage to Apply For Grants For International Music Events

Australian music writers are being encouraged to apply for grants to support their travel to international music events throughout 2023, in a bid to foster and promote the creation of more content about Australian stories and experiences discoverable on the global market.

This year, the Australia Council for the Arts is offering four travel bursaries worth $3,000 each towards travel costs for eligible writers to attend international music showcase events.

Priority will be given to events that are supported by Sounds Australia in 2023 and those with confirmed media content.

The Australia Council’s Head of Music, Kirsty Rivers, said the Australia Council recognised the critical importance of supporting local music writers to attend international events attended by Australian artists and industry, so that they may continue to tell the many rich and varied stories of Australia to the world.

“There is considerable scope to open up new opportunities and markets for Australian music globally, particularly as the world opens up post-COVID,” Ms Rivers said.

“This project is part of a suite of projects supporting the visibility and discoverability of Australian music by investing in quality critical discourse and music journalism, such as Music Writers’ Lab – Bigsound, Music Writers’ Lab – Womadelaide and Wikimedia – The Australian Music Project.

“Through these new $3,000 travel grants, we hope to continue to support some of Australia’s best and brightest writers to further their careers and – in turn – foster the creation of new and important content about Australia for the global stage.”

Under the grant guidelines, travel must be completed in 2023 and all other costs including insurance, visas and travel costs will be covered by the recipient.

Deadline for submissions is 17 April 2023 – with recipients to be notified as soon as possible after the assessment.

Applicants must be over 18 years old at the time of submission with a valid passport. No more than one recipient from any one organisation will be considered.
