American Express Open Air Cinema Sydney

American Express Openair Cinemas has announced its second stop in Sydney for the 19-20 season, just in time for the peak of Sydney’s stunning summer. The popular outdoor experience returns to Cadigal Green, at the University of Sydney in January 2020.  An exciting festival-inspired seasonal program of food and films has been revealed today.


FILMS

This year’s program kicks off with a screening of crowd pleaser Knives Out on Jan 4th, a thrilling and modern whodunit starring Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Toni Collette and Jamie Lee Curtis to name a few. 


The 2019-20 program features an exciting mix of recent box office hits such as Hustlers (8.1), Joker (9.1, 19.1), Ford V Ferrari (10.1) and Charlie’s Angels (17.1, 29.1). There are also two special preview screenings of the highly anticipated Bombshell (15.1) with Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman plus the latest film by kiwi visionary Taika Waititi, Jojo Rabbit (30.01) and the last instalment of the epic saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (31.01). No seasonal cinema experience would be complete without a festive flick making an appearance and you can get your fix at one of two screenings of Last Christmas (05.1, 18.1).


Little and big kids alike will rejoice at screenings of family films Frozen II (11.1, 1.2) Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (24.1) and Abominable (25.1). 


FOOD

The popular USU Eats food truck will be onsite every night to cater for moviegoers’ hunger with cheeseburgers, chipotle beef steaks, vegan fajitas and empanadas, satay chicken and honey roasted pumpkin salads. Just make sure to keep space for desert as Haagen-Dazs will be bringing the goods with their decadent ice cream flavours.

Fear not, the refreshments are taken care of, thanks to national partners Giesen WinesPIMMS and Greenall’s gin.It’s official, Wine Wednesdays are now a thing! Every Wednesday, guests can sample the full range of Giesen Wines (up to 8 different varieties) before settling in for the film.


FUN

The festival atmosphere will be in full swing every weekend with live music and DJ performances before the latest and greatest feature films light up the big screen.

Everyone can treat themselves with a variety of seating options available and add a touch of comfort to a night under the stars with a lounger or a blanket which can be hired online or onsite. Premium tickets to Prime Video Lounge include reserved seating on a beanbag, service straight to your seat, a glass of wine and fresh popcorn and seats in the Kathmandu Korner will get you a camping chair, a drink, popcorn and a special discount voucher valid in all Kathmandu stores.

The University of Sydney is the second stop in NSW of the tour before the screen pops up at Bondi Beach early February. The Trans-Tasman tour will continue on to captivate audiences in Canberra, Auckland and Christchurch.
