Best Restaurants in Sydney: Tokonoma

TOKONOMA SYDNEY

Photo supplied

I was invited to try lunch at Tokonoma in Bridge Street, Sydney. I’m a big fan of Japanese food and possibly having a Japanese sister-in-law has been a bit of an influence there.

The first thing I noticed about Tokonoma is it’s hidden in a little laneway (Loftus Lane) and you step down into a beautifully decorated restaurant. Stepping down into this basement reminds me a little of New York with the open kitchen and well spaced tables. It’s sort of mysterious in a way. The friendly staff greeted me with smiles and escorted me to my table where I was dining with a representative of the restaurant.

What does a girl have to drink at lunch? Bollinger of course! By the glass I will admit.

To start we had oysters, seaweed, tosazu 30. These were brilliant and quite sweet. This photo from my Instagram.

Next was something quite spectacular; honey bug nigiri, foie gras, truffle, soy jelly 18. The truffle fans will love this one I’m not huge on truffle, yet somehow this combination managed to blend flavours into something quite unique.

I should mention we were sharing these plates, which I find the best way to eat Japanese, a little taste of a lot!

The king crab, soba noodles, tobiko, cucumber, saikyo miso 24 was spectacular! I loved the tenderness of the noodles and the freshness of this dish.

One of my favourite Japanese dishes is eggplant which we ordered from the grill; eggplant, tama miso, dengaku miso 16. It didn’t last long on the plate! As you would expect from a restaurant like Tokonoma, it was perfect, and the presentation spot on.

Chef also sent us; hokkaido scallops, pickled apple, jalapeno 24. No wonder he sent this to us because it is amazing.

Final of the main was; black cod, saikyo miso, pickled ginger, hoba leaf 36. A stunning dish, and if you like fish, I’d definitely suggest you order this one.

We finished with a selecton of desserts and I can assure you by now I was done! However if you note the chocolate pudding in the photo below, I managed to make room to finish that off!

DISCLAIMER: I was a guest of the restaurant and thank you Tokonoma for having me. I'll be back.
